Regent Theatre

Located at 191 Collins St, the landmark Regent Theatre has played a key part in our city’s history, since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929. Following the standards of grand picture palaces of the time, Regent Theatre was designed for a mixture of film and live entertainment including a Wurlitzer organ. The Plaza Ballroom underneath had been redesigned to cater for the new talking pictures and opened later the same year. The original design by Cedric H. Ballantyne was not intended as high art but as a place to evoke fantastic faraway times and places to which anyone could escape for the price of a ticket. As such it has endeared itself to several generations of Melbournians. Having survived a fire, a flood, twenty years in darkness and many threats of demolition to turn the magnificent theatre into a car park or tabaret, the venue reopened in August 1996 meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.

Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever and continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions including Disney’s The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Sunset Boulevard, Wicked, Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies. This newly refurbished theatre suitable for major theatre productions was reopened on 19 August 1996 with the Plaza refurbished as a ballroom, now seating 2162, retains much of its original character, and boasting a classic Wurlitzer organ.

Serendipity Photography highly recommend this heritage listed theatre, as it is a gorgeous option for timeless and elegant wedding day shots. For ceremonies or receptions that are situated in Melbourne’s CBD, the exquisite finery of Collins Street provides a wonderful range of options for a alternative wedding photos. As it is conveniently located within walking distance to a myriad of grand churches, gardens, hotels and reception centres. The Rococo style architecture and luxurious interior of the Regent Theatre provides a unique and aesthetically striking backdrop to your magical day.
