Beach Boxes

At Serendipity we love the beautiful selection of beaches around Melbourne and Victoria, locations which offer an exquisite array of styles and atmospheres for wedding day photography. One of the features that renders the Melbourne Bay so distinctive is the historic and colourful display of beach boxes that line the shore of many of its beaches.
As we head into the Summer and Autumn months it is the perfect time to consider if one of the gorgeous beaches around the city (or further afield) could play a role in your wedding day — either as setting for a relaxed outdoor ceremony or as a vibrant location to visit on your way to the reception. To help you during the planning stages of your big day Serendipity have included some interesting history, and some of our favourite recent photographs featuring beach boxes at Brighton Beach!

Brighton Beach
Brighton Beach has long been a popular destination for wedding day photography, and its strip of beach boxes amongst the best in the world! Although approximately 1,860 bathing boxes, boatsheds and similar structures are located around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, the Brighton bathing boxes are the only remaining structures of their kind close to the Melbourne central business district. As a functional remnant of a bygone era, they provide a cultural and historical resource that is constantly being photographed, painted or drawn. These little pieces of history all retain classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes.
Today 82 beach boxes feature along the Brighton foreshore. The vibrant array of colours and textures provide interesting backdrops for bridal portraits and poses. The striking crimsons, sandy yellows and blues which are all popular colours in beach boxes create fabulous contrasts against the classic tones of the bride and groom’s attire. Or, if you’re hoping for a little less colour, the minimal structures of the beach boxes allow for dramatic compositions and atmospheric tones in black and white.
As bathing boxes and boatsheds are intrinsic to Port Phillip Bay. Serendipity will soon be bringing you some extended tips and locations from the Mornington Peninsula region, whose 45 kilometre coastline, and 26 beaches are home to over 1,300 beach boxes.
Whilst we head into the vibrant Summer and Autumn months, Serendipity suggest making the most of the warm climate and light filled skies by visiting some of the iconic beach locations around Melbourne, to find the perfect backdrop for your wedding day style.
