Early History of the Foreshore

As exciting as it is today, the St Kilda Foreshore also has an incredibly rich history. In 1906 Carlo Catani, an engineer originally from Italy, was contracted to prepare plans for the beautification of the Foreshore. Walking along the esplanade today you can see many signs of Catani’s hard work still standing in all there grandeur, including some landmarks named after the man himself. The famous St Kilda clocktower, gardens and arch are all attributed to the great work of Carlo Catani. During these original stages of refurbishment some the most notable features created along the foreshore were  Luna Park, Palais de Danse and the Palais Theatre. In the late 19th century one of Melbourne’s earliest tramlines was built to connect the CBD to the St Kilda beach, increasing access to the bay for recreation.

If you’re interested in using the iconic Luna Park as the setting for your wedding photography follow the link to our Luna Park page.

The Beautiful St Kilda Baths

The St Kilda Baths were opened in 1860, with separate sections for men and women. Sea bathing was popular during this period and was thought to have many health benefits, including sun exposure. Throughout the 19th century six sea baths were in operation on the St Kilda Foreshore, most of which have now been closed. The original St Kilda Baths, however, are still open for residents and tourists to enjoy.

One of the things that strikes you from the wedding photos is the lovely colours. The shots have a really fresh feel. I love the way the dress moves in the photos. It almost feels like you’re there. Everyone loves St Kilda. It’s a place of so many significant memories for a lot of people. It was such a great idea for Serendipity to suggest the little bridge as a place for when the guys meet the girls. Serendipity really captured the feel of the day and the photos are warm, relaxed and beautiful. I love these shots!
